Here is a Great book on Building Log Furniture

Building your own log furniture can give a real sence pleasure.

Most log furniture is made with dry wood.

The drawknife is the tool of choice for removing bark and it leaves a distinctive mark when finished.

The bark can peeled off while still green. This is called "sap peeling" and generallyworks better in the springtime.

This is a great way to do it if you have access to a kiln.If you use green wood, let it dry before you build.

Kiln drying produces less cracking than air drying. If you let it air dry the Wood will take about a year to air dry.

The cracks in the dry wood are natural and not really a problem if you position them correctly when building.

When using standing dead you must check the wood for rot cause you do not know how long the standing dead tree has been their.

After a forest fire the standing dead is probably your best bet for several reasons, you are not killing a live tree and when the fire goes through the forest it will burn the rotten trees to the ground but healthy trees will remain standing.

I am fortunate here in Montana where I live, cause we have fires here every year, witch leaves lots of standing dead trees to choose from.

However you get your logs, the best part of building your furniture will most likely be just getting out to hunt for that special piece of wood.
